This project is a short biography of my Great-Uncle, Arthur Patey.
Born in 1897 he was a young professional soldier at the outbreak of the
First World War and survived three years of fighting before vanishing at
the Battle of Arras on 9th April 1917.
The images used are a mixture of historic photos of Arthur, his family, fellow
soldiers of the First Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment, and contemporary images
of the landscape of Belgium and France. These are the areas where he lived and died,
as they are today.
The project was created as a response to the personal story which has influenced
so much of my research and creative work over many years.
